*Tempe

Children First Academy of Tempe, unlike any other school, caters to the needs of students and families in transitional and temporary housing creating a “home” atmosphere where children feel safe, secure and successful in their learning environment.

At Children First Academy of Tempe, we value the unique potential and learning style of each student. It is our belief that every student possesses the ability to achieve academic success, to live a productive and rewarding life, and to be a contributing member of his or her community.

It is important that parents work closely with the school, supporting the students, teachers and staff, helping to provide communication between students and the school.  We invite you to ask questions and take an active interest in the academic, social, and emotional development of your amazing children.

Dear Mentors and Volunteers,

As summer vacation comes to an end for our students, the teachers and staff of Tempe are gearing up for another very busy year. This mighty school has survived many trials. With the love, help and support of our community, our students have once again persevered. The dedication and efforts of our principal, teachers and staff prevented the closure of Pappas schools this past June.  Unfortunately, we were not able to keep our historical Pappas name. Beginning this school year we will be known as “Children First Academy.” While our name has changed, our school has not. We will continue to service these precious children and their families in the traditional way.  The time that volunteers and mentors spend with these kids is, without a doubt, the most precious and valuable gift. When our families are living in a transient lifestyle, the children endure the harsh realities of their life. With everyone working together they can continue to grow and flourish with the hope towards a brighter future.  Time is a precious commodity that we all seem to run short on. The time that you spend with our kids may not seem like a big deal, but to us IT IS! All of us here at Children First Academy want you to know how important and how very much you are appreciated. We look forward to hearing from each of you during this upcoming school year. You can reach us at (480)557-6211. Thank you again for all that you do.

Respectfully yours,

Diane Fernichio & Pat Betancourt

Understanding that stress at home can often affect a student’s academic performance, Children First Academy of Tempe is dedicated to helping families in need. The following professionals and services are available upon requests.

Medical Clinic: The clinic will conduct hearing and vision screenings during the school year. We also provide medical services on Wednesdays. This free service is available for students and family members.

Outreach Program: Assistance is available to help students and parents with social service agencies

Clothing: Clothing is available depending on supply and a note from parent/guardian. Clothing is available approximately once every other month and daily in an emergency situation. There is a schedule for the clothing room.

Food Boxes: Food boxes are available to our families as needed. If you are in need of a food box, please send a note or call the school to receive a food box that day.

School Counselor: Counseling services are available for children and parents in need.

There are countless wonderful books to explore, and we’d like our students to read them all. This year, you can help us achieve that goal through the Changing Hands Bookstore /Books for Schools/ program.

Every year, Changing Hands gives away thousands of dollars in books through their/ Books for Schools/ program. Anyone can earn free books for our school when they shop at Changing Hands from November 1 through December 31. Mention the program and our school’s name at checkout; instead of receiving Readers Club Card stamps or other promotions, Changing Hands will record a credit to our school in the amount of 20% of the pre-tax total.

This holiday season, use your regular holiday shopping to build our classroom libraries. Except for special orders, all merchandise counts towards the total – not only new and used books, but cards, calendars, music and gifts as well. Download the flyer here.
